Vocabulary of the Greek NT

P Oxy VI. 985 (i/A.D., second half) ἀνηλώμα (τος) Φαύστῳ ἀντλοῦντι μηχα (νήν), P Lond 1177.66 (A.D. 113) (= III. p. 183) ἀντλούντων ἀπὸ πρωίας ἕως ὀψέ. In the late P Oxy I. 147 (A.D. 556) we have a receipt for a ";rope"; or ";coil"; provided by the monks for the machine in the garden of the Holy Mary ἐπὶ τῷ ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ εἰς τὴν ἁγί (αν) κολυμβήθραν, ";for raising water to fill the holy font."; The subst. ἀντλητής occurs in P Lond 1177 (cited above), P Tebt I. 241 (B.C. 74) and P Strass I. 52.14 (A.D. 151); and ἀντλία in BGU IV 1120.47 f. (B.C. 5). For the compound ἀναντλέω used metaphorically, see P Vat A.13 (B.C. 168) (= Witkowski.2, p. 65) τοιούτους καιροὺς ἀνηντληκυῖα : similarly P Hawara 56.20 (? late i/A.D.) (Archiv v. p. 382) ἀρρωστίαν ἰσοθάνατο (ν) [ἐξ ]ήντλησα —presumably [ἀν ]ήντλησα is as likely, in view of the parallel just cited.
