1. lead away, carry off, ἀπάγουσι βόας καὶ ἴφια μῆλα Od. 18.278; ἀ. τινὰ ἐκτόπιον S. OT 1340 (lyr.), cf. 1521, etc.; προσάγειν.., ἀπάγειν, bring near.., hold far off, Arist. GC 336a18; ἀ. ἀχλὺν ἀπ' ὀφθαλμῶν remove it, Thphr. HP 7.6.2; τὸ ἱμάτιον ἀπὸ τοῦ τραχήλου Plu. Ant. 12; οὐκ ἀπάξετε ταῦτα; stop this fooling! Jul. Or. 7.225a: — Med., take away for or with oneself, παρθένον Hdt. 1.196, cf. 4.80, Ar. Nu. 1105, etc.; or that which is one's own, X. to lead away: Luke 13:15, Acts 23:17; Acts 24:7 (R, mg.), 1 Corinthians 12:2; esp. of leading to trial (so as law term in Attic), prison and death (MM, VGT, s.v.): Matthew 26:57; Matthew 27:2; Matthew 27:31, Mark 14:44; Mark 14:53; Mark 15:16, Luke 21:12; Luke 22:66; Luke 23:26, Acts 12:19; of the direction of a way: Matthew 7:13-14 (cf. συν -απ -άγω ).†

The verb is found four times in P Oxy I. 33 (late ii/A.D.), of one being ";led off"; to death, which may perhaps determine the meaning in Acts 12:19 : the guards were not merely ";imprisoned,"; but ";led away to death"; (RV mg). Luke 23:26, with the Vulgate duci and the gloss ἀποκτανθῆναι in D*, are probably decisive for this (the Attic) meaning. On the other hand, it should be noted that ἀ. is the ordinary word for ";arresting"; (cf. Genesis 39:22 τοὺς ἀπηγμένους = ";the prisoners";) as P Petr III. 36 (a) verso.6 ἀδίκως ἀπηγμένον and ib..27 ἀ ]κ ̣ρ ̣ι ̣βείας ἕνεκεν ἀπήχθην : so P Lille 7.13 (iii/B.C.) οὗτος δὲ ἀπήγαγέν με εἰς τὸ αὖθι δεσμωτήριον, P Petr II. 10 (2).12 συνέταξεν ὁ ὑπηρέτης ἀπαγαγεῖν με, ";the apparitor gave directions to arrest me"; (Ed.), and OGIS 90.14 (the Rosetta stone, B.C. 196) τοὺς ἐν ταῖς φυλακαῖς ἀπηγμένους. . . ἀπέλυσε τῶν ἐνκεκλ (η)μένων. Cf. also P Oxy II. 237vi. 18 (A.D. 186), where Chaeremon claims the right of taking away his daughter even against her will from her husband’s house—ἀπάγοντι αὐτὴν ἄκουσαν ἐκ τῆς τοῦ ἀνδρὸς οἰκίας, BGU IV. 1139.15 (B.C. 5) ἐτόλμησε. . . ἀποσ ̣τ ̣ερε ̣ι ̣̑ν ἀπαγαγεῖν τὴν θυγατέρα ἡμῶν. . . καὶ ἔχειν παρ᾽ ἑαυτῶι ἐν εἱρκ ̣τ ̣[ῆ ἐπὶ ] μ ̣ῆ ̣ν ̣ας ε ̄. In the dialect inscription Syll 271.6, .11 (ii/B.C.) it denotes apparently the ";capture"; of youths in a raid.
