Thayer's Expanded Definition

ὑπόδικος, ὑποδικον, equivalent to ὑπό δίκην ὤν, under judgment, one who has lost his suit; with a dative of the person debtor to one, owing satisfaction to: τῷ Θεῷ, i. e. liable to punishment from God, Romans 3:19 (see Morison, Critical Exposition of Romans Third, p. 147f). (Aeschylus, Plato, Andocides (), Lysias, Isaeus, Demosthenes, others.)

";loving self,"; occurs in Bibl. Greek only in 2Ti. 3:2 : cf. Philo Leg. Allegr. 1. 49 (ed. Cohn) φίλαυτος δὲ καὶ ἄθεος ὁ νοῦς οἰόμενος ἴσος εἶναι θεῷ. For the corr. subst. see P Par 26.1. 10 (B.C. 163) (= UPZ i. p. 247, Selections, p. 14) δι᾽ ὀλίων (l. ὀλίγων᾽ τὴν ατῶν ἀδικούντων ἡμᾶκ φιλαυτίαν ἐχθεῖναι. For φίλαυτος and φιλαυτία., Waddell (Selections, p. 178) refers to Plato Laws 731 D and the discussion in Aristot. Eth . N. ix. 8.
