1. singly, in one way, μένειν ἁ. ἐν τῇ αὑτοῦ μορφῇ Pl. R. 381c, etc.; ἁ. λέγεσθαι in one sense, opp. πολλαχῶς, Arist. Top. 158b10; ἁ. λεγόμενα, opp. συμπλεκόμενα, Id. Metaph. 1014a19, cf. The adverb is frequent in legal documents to lend emphasis to a statement : P Oxy II. 237vi. 21 (A.D. 186) ἄλλο ἀδίκημα εἰς αὑτὸν ἁπλῶς, ";any other single act of injustice against himself,"; cf. P Flor I. 28.15 (ii/A.D.) παντὸς ἁπλῶς εἴδους, and similarly P Amh II. 96.3 (A.D. 213). So with the negative P Lond 1218.10 (A.D. 39) (= III. p. 130) οὐκ εἶχον ἁπ ̣λ ̣ω ̣̑ς πρᾶγμα, P Oxy II. 268.16 (A.D. 58) περὶ ἄλλου μηδενὸς ἁπλῶς ἐνγράπτου ἢ ἀγράφου πράγματος, ";concerning any other matter whatever written or unwritten,"; ib. VI. 906.5 (ii/iii A.D.) μηδὲ περὶ ἄλλου μηδενὸς ἁπλῶς μέχρι τῆς ἐνεστώσης ἡμέρας, ";or on any other subject whatever up to the present day"; : and the short P Tebt II. 490 (B.C. 92 or 59) μὴ κατεγγύα μηδὲν τὸν Κόμωνος τοῦ Κόμωνος πρὸς μηδὲν ἁπλῶς. In a philosophic letter of iv/A.D., P Oxy I. 120.3 ff., the editors translate χρὴ γάρ τινα ὁρῶντα αἱαυτὸν ἐν δυστυχίᾳ κἂν ἀναχωρῖν καὶ μὴ ἁπλῶς μάχαισθαι τῷ δεδογμένῳ, ";when a man finds himself in adversity he ought to give way and not fight stubbornly against fate."; Reference should be made to Hort’s abundant illustrations in his note upon James 1:5.
