Il. 1.110, etc., or ἕνεκεν (twice in Hom., Od. 17.288, 310, rare in Trag., as E. Med. 999 (lyr.), and early Prose, Th. 6.2, X. HG 2.1.14, Pl. Smp. 210e; in Com., Men. Epit. 330; twice in fourth-cent. Att. Inscrr., IG 2.987A2, 611b13, but prevalent in later Inscrr., cf. SIG 577.7 (Milet., iii/ii B.C.); in late Prose, Sch. Pi. For ἕνεκα which is found only quater in the NT (Matthew 19:5, Luke 6:22, Acts 19:32; Acts 26:21), cf. P Lond 42.14 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30, Selections, p. 10) ἕ [νε ]κα τοῦ ἐκ τοῦ το [ιού ]του καιροῦ ἐμαυτή [ν ] τε καὶ τὸ παιδί [ον σ ]ου διακεκυβερνηκυῖα, P Oxy X. 1293.16 f. (A.D. 117–38) τοῦτο οὐχ ἕνεκα ἡμῶν ποιῶ ἀλλὰ ἕνεκα τῶν καμηλειτῶν, ib. III. 533.25 (ii/iii A.D.) ἕνεκα τῆς προσόδου, ";about the revenue."; The form ἕνεκεν, which prevails from iii/B.C. onwards, and is probably Ionic in origin (cf. Thumb Hellen. p. 57), may be illustrated from P Petr III. 36(a) verso .27 (iii/B.C.) τῆς Διοφάνου [ς οὖν ἀ ]κ ̣ρ ̣ι ̣βείας ἕνεκεν ἀπήχθην, P Flor II. 158.3 (iii/A.D.) ἕνεκεν [ἀνα ]γκαίας χρείας, ib. 163.5 (iii/A.D.) ἕνεκεν ὑμῶν φρόντισον, P Meyer 23.4 (end iv/A.D.) ἕνεκεν ἀργυρίου, and before a consonant in the late P Oxy VI. 902.12 (c. A.D. 465) εἰς τελείαν γὰρ ἀνατροπὴν. . . περιέστην ἕνεκεν τοῦ προειρημένου πολιτευομένου, ";I have been reduced to complete ruin through the aforesaid member of the council"; (Edd.), ib. 943.3 (vi/A.D.) ἀπελθεῖν εἰς δίαιταν ἕνεκεν τοῦ λου ̣τροῦ, ";to come to arbitration with respect to the bath."; In all these instances ἕνεκεν precedes the subst., as generally in the NT : cf. Blass-Debrunner Gr. § 216. I. On a corresponding usage in the Attic inscrr. see Meisterhans Gr. p. 217 where it is stated that in ii/B.C. the relation of ἕνεκα : ἕνεκεν = 4 : 22 : cf. also Thieme p. 8, and Rouffiac Recherches, p. 22. For the forms οὕνεκα,—εν, see P Petr II. 19 (1a).2 οὕνεκα τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ καλῶς ἔχοντος, ";in the name of God and of fair play"; (Ed.), P Hib I. 170 (B.C. 247) τούτου γὰρ οὕνεκεν πρὸ πολλοῦ σοι γράφω, and for εἵνεκεν, as in Luke 4:18, Acts 28:20, cf. Preisigke 1568 (time of Euergetes II., B.C. 145–116) εὐνοίας εἵνεκεν τῆς πρὸς αὑτούς, P Giss I. 40ii. 21 (A.D. 212–5) κατάγειν θυσίας εἵνεκεν ταύρους καὶ ἄλλα τινὰ ε ̣̀ν ̣ψ ̣[υ ]χα : the form εἵνεκα occurs in an epigram regarding Homer’s birthplace, Ostr 1148.4 (ii/B.C.)—
Εἵνεκ᾽ ἐμῆς δόξης φ [ασὶ ] τεκεῖν με πόλεις.
