I clothing, raiment, χαλκόν τε χρυσόν τε ἅλις ἐσθῆτά τε δόντες Od. 5.38; χρηστηρία ἐ. the dress of prophetesses, A. Ag. 1270; Ἀργολὶς ἐ. Id. Supp. 237; μετρίᾳ ἐσθῆτι χρήσασθαι to dress simply, Th. 1.6: καθαρὰ ἐ., = Lat. toga pura, Nic. Dam. II collectively, clothes, ἐσθῆτα ἔσφερον εἴσω, i.e. the clothes just washed, Od. 7.6; ἔντυον εὐνὴν ἐσθῆτος μαλακῆς 23.290; τὰ ἐσθῆτος ἐχόμενα εἶχον κατηρείκοντο Hdt. 3.66, cf. X. An. 3.1.19: rarely in later Gr., Plu. CG 2, PThead. 49.4 (iv A.D.), POxy. 2110.5 (iv A.D.).
III metaph., ἐ. τῆς πόλεως, of walls, Demad. Fr. 4.

P Oxy III. 471.101 (ii/A.D.) ἐν λευκαῖς ἐσθῆσιν, P Ryl II. 116.15 (A.D. 194) τὴν ἐσθῆτά μου περιέσχισαν, P Thead 49.4 (A.D. 307–324 ?) ἐσθῆτα στρατιωτικήν, BGU I. 21iii. 6 (iv/A.D.) ἐσθῆτος, P Oxy XII. 1428.9 (iv/A.D.) τὴν ἐσθῆτα ἀ ̣νεπι [κλή ]τ ̣οις ̣ τοῖς ὑφάσμασιν κατασκευάσαι, ";to manufacture the clothing in irreproachable (?) materials"; (Edd.), OGIS 383.135 (inscr. of Antiochus I. of Commagene—i/B.C.) κόσμον Περσικῆς ἐσθῆτος ἀ [ν ]αλαμβάνων (see s.v. ἀναλαμβάνω). In Syll 817.7 we have ἐσθ [ὴ ]ν τετιμημένην διακοσίων δραχμῶν, where Dittenberger remarks that this form of the acc. is not found elsewhere, but refers to Meyer Gr..8 p. 427 : for the ordinary form, in addition to the exx. cited above, see Michel 833.62 (B.C. 279) ὁ κόσμος ὁ τοῦ ἀγάλματος τοῦ τὴν ἔρειαν ἐσθῆτα ἔχοντος.
