ἱμάς, ἱμαντος, ὁ (from ἵημι to send; namely, a vessel, which was tied to thongs of leather and let down into a well for the purpose of drawing water; hence, ἱμάω also, to draw something made fast to a thong or rope (recent etymol. connect it with Skt. si to bind; cf. Curtius, § 602; Vanicek, p. 1041)); from Homer down; a thong of leather, a strap; in the N. T. of the thongs with which captives or criminals were either bound or beaten (see προτείνω), Acts 22:25 (4 Macc. 9:11; Sir. 30:35); of the thongs or ties by which sandals were fastened to the feet, Mark 1:7; Luke 3:16; John 1:27 (so also in Isaiah 5:27; Xenophon, anab. 4, 5, 14; Plutarch, symp. 4, 2, 3; Suidas ἱμάς. σφαιρωτήρ σανδαλιου, ζανιχιον, οἷον τό λωριον τοῦ ὑποδήματος).

P Petr II. 25 (d)2 (iii/B.C.) εἰς ἱμάντας ἐλαίου, a receipt for oil for greasing straps, P Oxy X. 1294.7 (ii/iii A.D.) ἱμάντα δεδεμένον εἰς τὸ πανάριον καλόν, ";a good strap tied to the basket"; (Edd.). An edict of iv/A.D., P Oxy IX. 1186.2, directed against the use of the whip (ἱμάντες) in the punishment of free men, has—τὸ τὴν διὰ τῶν ἱμάντων λητ ̣αρι [ ]ων ἐπιχωρίως οὕτω καλουμένων αἰκείαν ὑπομένειν ἐστὶν μὲν καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν δουλικὴν τύχην εἰληχότων ἀνιαρόν, ";subjection to the punishment of scourging, called in the native speech . . . , is even for those of servile estate lamentable"; (Ed.) : cf. Acts 22:25 (RV marg. ";for the thongs";). In Syll 537.55 (2nd half iv/B.C.) ἐπιθεὶς ἱμάντας πλάτος ἡμιποδίου the reference is to ";asseres horizontali positura canteriis impositi"; (Ed.) : cf. ib. 587.64 (B.C. 329–8). A good illustration of Mark 1:7 is afforded by Menander Fragm. p. 33, No.109.2 ὑποδούμενος τὸν ἱμάντα γὰρ τῆς δεξιᾶς | ἐμβάδος ἀπέρρηξ (α).
