Vocabulary of the Greek NT

In BGU II. 423.7 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 90) the soldier Apion after a stormy passage to Italy writes to his father—εὐχαριστῶ τῷ κυρίῳ Σεράπιδι, ὅτι μου κινδυνεύσαντος εἰς θάλασσαν ἔσωσε. The verb is common with an instrum. dat. in the sense of endangering one’s life, e.g. P Lond 44.5 (B.C. 161) (= I. p. 34) τῶι ζῆν πλεονάκις κεκινδυνευκώς, P Tebt II. 283.15 (B.C. 93 or 60) κινδυνωι (l. εύει) τῶι ζῆν, ib. 304.13 (A.D. 167–8), and P Ryl II. 68.16 cited s.v. κατάκειμαι ad init. For the constr. with the inf., as in Acts 19:27; Acts 19:40 cf. P Par 15.10 (B.C. 120) κινδυνεύων τῶν ἰδίων στερηθῆναι, BGU II. 530.12 (= Selections, p. 61) κινδυνεύω ἐκστῆναι οὗ ἔχω [κλη ]ροῦ, ";I run the risk of losing the lot (of land) which I possess,"; ib..30 ἐπὶ κινδυνεύει τὰ φυτὰ διαφωνῆσαι, ";since there is a risk that the plants perish,"; and P Oxy I. 44.9 (late i/A.D.) κινδυνευόντων μεταναστῆναι, ";in danger of absconding.";
