Vocabulary of the Greek NT

προκοπή, unlike its verb (προκόπτω), is not found in classical Greek (cf. Rutherford NP, p. 158), but is a term. techn. in Stoic philosophy for ";progress towards wisdom"; (cf. Zeller Stoics, p. 294). It occurs ter in the NT (Philippians 1:12; Philippians 1:25, 1 Timothy 4:15 : cf. Sirach 51:17, 2 Maccabees 8:8), and its colloquial use may be illustrated from P Ryl II. 233.16 (ii/A.D.) εὔχομαί σε τὸν κύριον ἰδεῖν ἐν μείζοσι προκοπαῖς, ἐν ἁδραῖς εὐημερίαις, ";I pray, my lord, that I may see your further advancement and ripe prosperity"; (Edd.), P Giss I. 27.7 (ii/A.D.) (= Chrest. I. p. 29) εὐαγγελίζοντι τὰ τῆς νείκης αὐτοῦ καὶ προκοπῆς (report of a victory over the Jews), P Tebt II. 276.39 (ii/iii A.D.) the fragment Of an astrological work according to which, if the conjunction of certain planets takes place at the morning rising of Venus, ἀπὸ νε [ότ ]η ̣τ ̣ο ̣ς ̣ τὰς προκοπὰς ἀποτελοῦσιν, ";they cause prosperity from youth upwards"; (Edd.), and P Oxy XIV. 1631.20 (A.D. 280) κατὰ προκοπὴν τῶν ἔργων, ";according to the progress of the works"; (Edd.).
