ῤαπίζω; future ῥαπίσω (cf. Buttmann, 37 (32f)); 1 aorist ἐρράπισα and (so L T Tr WH) ἐραπισα (see Rho); (from ῤαπίς a rod);

1. to smite with a rod or staff (Xenophanes in (Diogenes Laërtius 8, 36; Herodotus, Demosthenes, Polybius, Plutarch, others).

2. "to smite in the face with the palm of the hand, to box the ear: τινα, Matthew 26:67 (where it is distinguished from κολαφίζω (A. V. buffet); for Suidas says ῥαπισαι. πατάσσειν τήν γνάθον ἁπλῆ τῇ χειρί not with the fist; hence, the Vulg. renders itpalmas in faciem ei dederunt; (A. V. marginal reading (R. V. marginal reading) adopt sense 1 above)); τινα ἐπί (L T Tr text WH εἰς) τήν σιαγόνα, Matthew 5:39 (Hosea 11:4). Cf. 1. prop., to strike with a rod.

2. In late writers, to strike (the face) with the palm of the hand: Matthew 26:67; c. acc pers., seq. εἰς τ . σιαγόνα , Matthew 5:39 (cf. Field, Notes, 40, 105).†

To the ordinary citations for this word = ";object of worship"; (Acts 17:23, 2 Thessalonians 2:4) we may add Arist. Apol. xii. οὐ γὰρ ἠρκέσθησαν [οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι ] τοῖς τῶν Χαλδαίων καὶ Ἑλλήνων σεβάσμασιν.

For σεβασμός see M. Anton, iv. 16 τὸν σεβασμὸν τοῦ λόγου, ";thy reverence of reason,"; and cf. Aristeas 179 σεβασμο ̣̣ν ἀποδοῦναι, ";to pay homage."; The adj. σεβάσμιος with reference to an oath may be seen in P Amh II. 140.10 (A.D. 349) ὀμνύν [τ ]ες τὸν θεῖο [ν κ ]αὶ σ [ε ]βάσμιον ὅρκο [ν τῶ ]ν πάντα νικών [των ] δεσποτῶν ἡμῶν Ἀγούστων, ";swearing the divine and holy oath of our all-victorious masters the Augusti,"; and the other citations in Preisigke Wörterb. s.v. ὅρκος.
