inf. ἀριστᾶν, Ion. -ῆν Hp. Vict. 3.68: pf. ἠρίστηκα X. Cyr. 4.2.39, Antiph. 212.25; of this tense the Com. also used I pl. ἠρίσταμεν Ar. Fr. 496, Theopomp.Com. 22, inf. ἠριστάναι Hermipp. 60: Pass., pf. ἠρίστημαι, v. infr. [ ᾱρ Ar. Eq. 815, etc.; ᾰρ only late, AP 11.387 (Pall.)]:

1. take the ἄριστον or midday meal, Ar. Nu. 416, Eq. 815; ἠρίστων, opp. ἐδείπνουν, X. Mem. 2.7.12, cf. An. 4.6.21: c. acc. rei, breakfast on, ἴα καὶ ῥόδα Diod.Com. 2.37, cf. Pherecr. 122.5: pf. Pass. impers., ἠρίστηται δ' ἐξαρκούντως Ar. Ra. 377.

2. eat a second meal, opp. μονοσιτέω, Hp. V M 10, Acut. 30.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἀριστάω, ἀρίστω: 1 aorist ἠρίστησα; (τό ἄριστον, which see);

a. to breakfast: John 21:12, 15; (Xenophon, Cyril 6, 4, 1; and often in Attic).

b. by later usage to dine: παρά τίνι, Luke 11:37; (Genesis 43:24; Aelian v. h. 9, 19).
