גְּדוּד pl. גְּדוּדִים and גְּדוּדוֹת m.

(1) incision, cutting (from the root גָּדַד).

(a) of the skin, Jeremiah 48:37.

(b) of a field, a furrow, Psalms 65:11.

(2) a troop, band of soldiers (pr. a cutting in), so called from the form [“as intended to cut or break in upon the enemy”], like the Lat. acies, especially of light armed troops foraging. Genesis 49:19, גָּד גְּדוּד יְגוּדֶנּוּ “troops shall invade Gad.” This is to be understood of the nomadic Arabs in the neighbourhood of Gad. 2 Kings 5:2, אֲרָם יָצְֽאוּ גְּדוּדִים “the Syrians had made an incursion in bands.” 1 Samuel 30:8, 15 1 Samuel 30:15, 23 1 Samuel 30:23; 2 Samuel 3:22. בְּנֵי הַגְּדוּד “sons, i.e. soldiers, of a band,” 2 Chronicles 25:13 poet. בַּת גְּדוּד Mic. 4:14. Used of a troop of robbers, Hosea 7:1; 1 Kings 11:24. גְּדוּדֵי יְהֹוָה “the bands of Jehovah,” used of angels, Job 25:3 of the troops of ills sent by him, Job 19:12. Syr. ܓܘܽܕܐܳ a troop, a band of soldiers.
