Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

זִו m. i.q. זִיו (which indeed is the reading of many copies), for זְהִיו (from the root זָהָה), splendour, especially of flowers, whence comes the name of the second Hebrew month, [Zif], from the new moon of May to that of June, (according to the Rabbins from the new moon of April to that of May), as though it were the month of flowers; 1 Kings 6:1, 37 1 Kings 6:37Chald. יֶרַח זִיו נִיצָנַיָּא the month of the splendour of flowers. In Chaldee, Syriac and Arabic, the same month is called, אִייָר, ܐܺܝܳܪܐܳ, أَيَّارُ, also from splendour. Compare German Lenz, Sued. Glenz, spring; likewise named from splendour, brightness.
