Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

זָלַל answering to the German fchüttern, fchütteln, fchütten, to shake (kindred with דָּלַל and the words there compared).

(1) to shake, to make tremble, see Niphal.

(2) to pour out, to shake out (hence, to lavish), (ausfchütten, ausfchütteln). Part. זוֹלֵּלּ a squanderer, a prodigal, Proverbs 23:21, 28:7 Deuteronomy 21:20; Proverbs 23:20, זוֹלְלֵי בָשָׂר “those who squander (or, are prodigals as to) their own body,” voluptuous profligates. Comp. זוּל. And as we only cast out and throw away those things which we count worthless, hence

(3) intrans. to be abject, worthless, vile. Jeremiah 15:19; Lamentations 1:11. (Arab. ذَلَّ id., ذُلُّ vileness, abjectness of mind. Syr. ܙܰܠ to be vile.) See Hiph.

Niphal, נָוֹל (comp. as to this form Lehrg. § 103, note 7), to be shaken, to tremble. Isai. 64:2, מִפָּנֶיךָ הָרִים נָזֹלּוּ “the mountains tremble before thy face.” The passage, Jud 5:5, הָרִים נָזְלוּ is to be similarly understood, for נָֽזְלוּ is there used for נָזֹלּוּ Lehrg. 103, note 15. Well rendered by the LXX. ἐσαλεύθησαν (the root זלל agreeing in etymology with σάλος, σαλεύω), and the Ch. and Syr. express the same (Arab. زَلْزَلَ to shake the earth, زَلْزَلُ an earthquake). See זַלְזִלִּים.

Hiphil (pointed according to the Chaldee form), הִזִּיל causative of Kal No. 3, to despise. Lamentations 1:8. [“See the root זוּלּ.”]
