Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מָסַס to melt, to flow down, to waste away. In Kal once found, used of a sick person wasting away, Isaiah 10:18. (Kindred roots are מָסָה, מָאַס No. II; see also ماث to dissolve, to macerate in water, and the words given under מַי.)

Niphal נָמֵס, in pause נָמָס, fut. יִמַּס, inf. הִמֵּס

(1) to be melted, used of the manna, Exodus 16:21 of wax, Psal. 68:3 by hyperb. of mountains melting with blood, Isaiah 34:3.- Judges 15:14, “his bands melted from off his hands,” i.e. fell from his hands as if loosed. Used of cattle when sick, 1 Samuel 15:9.

(2) to become faint.

(a) with fear, terror, 2 Samuel 17:10 often used of the heart, Deuteronomy 20:8; Joshua 2:11, 5:1. The original force of the expression is retained in the following, Joshua 7:5, “the heart of the people melted, וַיְהִי לְמָֽיִם and became water.

(b) with sorrow, grief, Psalms 22:15, 112:10 compare Ovid. ex Ponto, i. 2, 57, “sic mea perpetuis liquescunt pectora curis, Ignibus admotis ut nova cera solet.”

Hiphil, causat. of Niphal No. 2, a, to make fearful, Deuteronomy 1:28.

Derivatives, מָס, תֶּמֶס; comp. also מַה, מִסָּה, which I refer however to another root.
