מַר m. (from the root מָרַר).

(1) subst. a drop, so called from flowing down (see מָרַר No. 1 ), Isaiah 40:15.

(2) adj. f. מָרָה bitter, Isaiah 5:20; Proverbs 27:7 bitter, acrid (fcharf), of brackish water, Exodus 15:23. Neutr. as a substantive, bitterness (of death), 1 Samuel 15:32. Metaph.

(a) sad, sorrowful, Ezekiel 3:14 often used of the mind, Job 21:25. מַר נֶפֶשׁ adj. sad of soul, 1 Samuel 1:10, 22:2 and subst. sadness, Job 7:11, 10:1.

(b) bitter, of a cry or weeping, Germ. bitterlich. צְעָקָה גְדוֹלָה וּמָרָה “a loud and bitter cry,” Genesis 27:34; Esther 4:1; Ezekiel 27:31, מִסְפֵּד מַר “a bitter (violent) lamentation;” also used of a bitter fate, Proverbs 5:4; Amos 8:10.
