Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אֶפַע a word once found (in my judgment an incorrect reading), Isaiah 41:24, where speaking of the powerlessness of idols פָּעָלְכֶם מֵאֶפַע, in the other member מֵאַיִן. Some of the Jewish writers take אֶפַע as i.q. אֶפְעֶה a viper; and they render it “your work (is) worse than a viper;” but this is altogether unsuited to the context, in which idols are said to be able to do nothing. Read with Vulg., Chald., Saad. מֵאֶפֶס, which is found in the similar passages, Isaiah 40:17, 41:12, 29 Isaiah 41:29, and is of very frequent occurrence in these chapters.
