The Hebrews recognized the east as the top of the four compass points (contrary to our understanding of north) and is the direction faced when orienting direction. The past is understood as what is in front, or before, you as the past is known (contrary to our understanding of the future being in front of us) . [from: md- the red color blood combined with the quph as the rising sun, hence the "rising sun of blood"]

1 former, ancient, ׳יָמִים ק Ezekiel 38:17 former days; ׳שָׁנִים ק Malachi 3:4 ("" יְמֵי עוֺלָם): feminine plural as n., former things Isaiah 43:18 ("" רִאשֹׁנוֺת); masculine singular as collective noun מְשַׁלהַקַּדְמֹנִי 1 Samuel 24:14 a proverb of the ancients.

קַדְמֹנִי m. ־ִית, f. adj.

(1)  in front, anterior, Ezekiel 10:19, 11:1 hence

(2) oriental, eastern. הַיָּם הַקַּדְמֹנִי the eastern sea, i.e. the Dead Sea, opp. to the western, i.e. Mediterranean, Ezekiel 47:18; Joel 2:20.

(3) old, ancient, Ezekiel 38:17. Pl. קַדְמֹנִים the elder (amongst contemporaries), Job 18:20. Sing. collect. 1 Samuel 24:14, מְשַׁל הַקַּדְמֹנִי “the proverb of the ancients.” Pl. f. קַדְמֹנִיּוֹת ancient, former, past things, Isaiah 43:18.

(4) [Kadmonites], pr.n. of a Canaanitish nation, Genesis 15:19.
