Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

קָרֵב Zephaniah 3:2 fut. יִקְרַב, inf. קְרֹב and קָרְבָה Exodus 36:2, to approach, to come near, (Arab. قَرِبَ, Syr. ܩܪܒܶ), used of men, Joshua 10:24, and poet. of things, Ezekiel 37:7 especially of time, Deuteronomy 15:9; Genesis 47:29, וַיִּקְרְבוּ יְמֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לָמוּת “and the days drew near for Israel to die;” 1 Kings 2:1. Followed by אֶל of pers. or thing, Genesis 37:18; Exodus 14:20 more rarely לְ Job 33:22 followed by בְּ Psalms 91:10. Specially

(a) God is said to draw near, when he aids the afflicted, Psalms 69:19 Lamen. 3:57 also of men; followed by אֶל 1 Kings 2:7. On the other hand

(b) those are said to draw near to God who piously worship him, Zephaniah 3:2 also those who serve in the ministry of the temple, Levit. 16:1 (whence it is part. קָרֵב); Ezekiel 40:46 (followed by לִפְנֵי).

(c) קָרַב אֶל־אִשָּׁה is used, in a good sense, of conjugal intercourse, Genesis 20:4; Isaiah 8:3 like the Gr. πλησιάζειν; see Gatackeri Opp. Crit., p. 78; Arab. فرب

(d) in a hostile sense, to draw near, to advance; followed by אֶל־הַמִּלְחָמָה, לַמִּלְחָמָה to, or for, battle, Deuteronomy 20:3 אֶל עִיר against a city, Deuteronomy 20:10; Joshua 8:5 עַל פּ׳ against any one, Psalms 27:2. Compare קְרָב.

(e) Isaiah 65:5, קְרַב אֵלֶיךָ “draw to thyself,” i.e. recede hence, approach no nearer.

Niphal, i.q. Kal, to come near, Exodus 22:7; Joshua 7:14.

Piel קֵרֵב

(1) causat. to cause to approach, Hosea 7:6; Isaiah 41:21, 46:13 to admit, to receive, Psalms 65:5 to bring near to one another (two things), Ezekiel 37:17 (where קָרַב is imp. for קָרֵב).

(2) intrans. (and intensitive), to be very near, Ezekiel 36:8, followed by a gerund.

Hiphil

(1) to cause to approach, to bring near, i.e.

(a) to bring persons near, followed by אֶל to any one, Exodus 28:1, 29:4; times, Ezekiel 22:4 to receive to oneself, Numbers 8:9, 10 Jeremiah 30:21.

(b) to bring, to offer a gift, Judges 3:18, 5:25 a sacrifice, Leviticus 3:1, 7:8 Numbers 9:13 (compare קָרְבָּן); to bring (a cause to a judge), Deuteronomy 1:17.

(c) to bring together two things, Isaiah 5:8.

(2) followed by מִן, to cause to withdraw, to remove, 2 Kings 16:14, וַיַּקְרֵב מֵאֵת פְּנֵי הַבַּיִת “and he removed the brazen altar from before the house.” Compare נָגַשׁ No. 2, also add the Sanscrit âgam, to approach and to recede. It has been argued by Fäsius (Neue philol. Jahrb. i. p. 221) that the signification of receding should be altogether rejected in these verbs.

(3) intrans. to draw near, Exodus 14:10 followed by a gerund, to be near (about) to do, Genesis 12:11; Isaiah 26:17.

Derived nouns, קָרֵב-קֻרְבָּן, קָ֦רוֹב.

קָרֵב m. verbal adj. drawing near, approaching, Deuteronomy 20:3; 1 Kings 5:7.
