(1) lion of God, i.e. very mighty hero. Collect. 2 Samuel 23:20, שְׁנֵי אֲרִיאֵל מוֹאָב “two heroes of Moab;” see אַרְאֵלּ and אֲרִי 1 Chronicles 11:22. (Compare Arab. اُللَّهِ أَسَدُ and اُللَّهِ لَيْتُ lion of God, an epithet of brave men, and Pers. شير خدا Shiri khoda, lion of God.) Isaiah 29:1, Isaiah 29:2, used of Jerusalem as the “city of heroes,” which is to be unconquered; although others, comparing the passage of Ezekiel about to be cited, render it hearth, i.e. altar of God.
