Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

רָפַף an unused root, which had, I suppose, the primary signification of to pluck off (see רָפָא ); which connects many glosses which the Arabic lexicographers give very confusedly under the word رفّ, as to suck breasts, to eat herbs, to sew up (compare רָפָא), to take hold of any one, as a fever. Hence is derived رَفُّ, fold, flock of sheep; to which, without doubt, answers the Mishnic רפת (רֶפֶר, of the form דֶּלֶת from דָּלַל, סֹלֶת from סָלַל) an ox-stall; Baba Bathra, ii. § 3; vi. § 4 (prop. prœsepe, manger, out of which they pull down the hay; Germ. Raufe; comp. אֻרְיָה and אֵבוּס); and the Biblical word רְפָתִים ox-stalls; which see. רוֹפַף Job 26:11 see under the root רוּף.
