Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָבַק a root not used in Kal, which I suppose to have had the force of to pound, to make small, from the onomatopoetic syllable בק, בך, פג, פק, which, as well as דך, דק (see דָּקַק, דָּכַךְ ), had the force of pounding; comp. בָּכָה to drop, to distil; דפק, פגע, פגש, also πηγή, πηγνύω, Germ. pochen, boken (comp. specially Erz pochen). Hence אָבָק dust.

Niphal נֶאֶבַק Genesis 32:25, 26 Genesis 32:26, recip. to wrestle, construed with עִם; denom. from אָבָק dust, because in wrestling the dust is raised. So in Greek παλαίειν, συμπαλαίειν, συγκονιοῦσθαι from πάλη, κόνις. An unusual word appears to have been used by the sacred writer, in order to allude to the name of the river יַבֹּק, verse 23 Genesis 32:23.
