Qal whet, sharpen: Perfect 1 singular אִם שַׁנּוֺתִ֫י בְּרַק חַרְבִּי (Ges§ 67ee) Deuteronomy 32:41, of ׳י s preparation for judgment; 3 plural (כַחֶרֶב) שָֽׁנְנוּלְשׁוֺנָם Psalm 64:4; Psalm 140:4 of uttering sharp words; Passive participle שְׁנוּנִים sharpened, of arrows, Isaiah 5:28; Psalm 45:6, figurative of tongue Psalm 120:4, of false witness Proverbs 25:18.

שָׁנַן (Chald. id., Arab. سَنَّ) to sharpen; a sword, Deuteronomy 32:41 metaph. the tongue, i.e. to assail any one with sharp sayings, Psalms 64:4, 140:4. Part. pass. שָׁנוּן sharpened (of a weapon), Psalms 45:6; Isaiah 5:28.

Piel, to inculcate any thing on any one (Germ. einfchärfen); followed by acc. of pers. and dat. of thing, Deuteronomy 6:7.

Hithpoel, to be wounded, as if pierced through (with grief), Psalms 73:21.

Derivatives, שַׁיִת (which see, for שֶׁנֶת ), שְׁנִינָה.
