Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

בָּלָה fut. יִבְלֶה pr. to fall, to fall away, to fail (like נָבַל, אָבַל, which see), abfallen, einfallen, verfallen, specially used

(1) of garments fallen away and torn by use and age. Followed by מֵעַל. Deuteronomy 8:4, “thy raiment לֹא בָֽלְתָה מֵעָלֶיךָ fell not away from thee” (worn out and torn). Deuteronomy 29:4, and absol. Joshua 9:13; Nehemiah 9:21. Applied to the heaven and the earth perishing like an old garment, Isaiah 50:9, 51:6 Psalms 102:27. (Arab. بَلِىَ to be worn out as a garment.)

(2) of men, who through sickness, age, or cares, waste away; Germ. einfallen, verfallen (compare Gr. παλαιός, and with another flexion, μέλω, curo). Job 13:28, והוּא בְּרָקָב יִבְלֶה, “and he (δεικτικῶς for I) as a rotten thing falleth away,” wasteth. Genesis 18:12; Psalms 32:3. (Compare بَالَى to care for, pr. to be consumed with cares; بِلْىُ consumed with cares; بَالُ, ܒܳܠܳ the heart, the mind, so called from cares (see בָּל ). Eth. በልየ፡ to be or become old.) Hence

(3) to fail wholly, to be brought to nothing; whence בַּל, בְּלִי, בִּלְתִּי nothing, not.

Piel

(1) causat. of Kal No. 2, Lamentations 3:4 hence generally, to consume, to waste (trans.), Psalms 49:15; Isaiah 65:22. Applied to time, as in Lat. tempus terere, τρίβειν βίον. Job 21:13, יְבַלּוּ בַטּוֹב יְמֵיהֶם “they spend or pass their days in wealth.”

(2) to afflict, trouble, 1 Chronicles 17:9. (Arab. بلى IV. id. بَاَءُ and بَليَّةُ sorrow, affliction, calamity.) Compare Ch. בְּלָא.

Hence are derived the nouns and particles אֲבָל, בַּל, בָּל, בָּלֶה, בְּלוֹ, בְּלִי, בִּלְתִּי, בְּלוֹאִים, תַּבְלִית, and the compounds בְּלִיַּעַל, בִּלעֲדֵי, בְּלִימָה.
