Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

סָלַל

(1)  to lift up, to elevate, to exalt, to gather, or cast up into a heap. Jeremiah 50:26, like the kindred roots סָלָא, סָלָה (comp. also סָלַה, סָלַע, and סָלַק, also תָּלַל, תָּלָה, נָטַל tollo). See Pilpel. Specially, to make a level way by casting up a bank, to embank (comp. רוּם Isaiah 49:11). Isaiah 57:14, 62:10 Proverbs 15:19; Jeremiah 18:15. Job 19:12, וַיָּסֹלּוּ עָלַי דַּרְכָּם “and they cast up (prepare) their way to me.” Job 30:12 without דֶּרֶךְ Psal. 68:5, סֹלּוּ “make plain (sc. the way).”

From the notion of being elevated, lofty, has sprung

(2) to move to and fro, to waver, used of things that are lofty, tall, and slender, which are easily shaken (von dem Schlanken und Schwanken). Specially used of the slender and pendulous boughs and twigs of trees, such as willows and palms, which are used for weaving baskets, or bound together to make brooms; comp. דָּלַל, זָלַל, زنرل; whence זַלְזִלִּים tendrils, and תַּלַל No. 1, 2; whence תַּלְתַּלִּים. Hence סַלִּים and סַלְסִלּוֹת (Arab. sing. سَلَّةُ) baskets, as being made of slender twigs; compare the lengthened forms סַנְסַנִּים (l and n being interchanged) the pendulous shoots of the palm, of which brooms are made (whence the Syriac and Chald. verb סנן to sweep with a broom); צִנְצֶנֶת a basket (with the cognate טֶנֶא, Chald. צֶנֶא a basket, وضن to weave baskets). As the branches of the palm-tree, before the shoots open, are covered with thorns, these thorns of the palm-tree are called by names from the same root, as سُلَالُ and سَلَّاُّ thorns growing on palm branches; and Hebr. סִלּוֹן, סַלּוֹן a thorn which grows on a twig, from סַל (pr. a twig), and the formative syllable וֹן. Arabic مِسَلَّةُ a large needle, so called from its resemblance to a thorn.

Pilpel, i.q. Kal No. 1, metaph. Proverbs 4:8, סַלְסְלֶהָ “exalt her (wisdom),” sc. with praises.

Hithpolel הִסְתּוֹלֵל (denom. from סֹלְלָה), to oppose oneself as a mound (fich dämmen), to resist, followed by בְּ Exodus 9:17, עוֹדְךָ מִסְתּוֹלֵל בְּעַמִּי “as yet dost thou resist my people.”

From the first signification No. 1, these derivative nouns are taken, סֹלְלָה, מְסִלָּה, סֻלָּם, מַסְלוּל, and pr.n. סִלָּא, סַלּוּ, סַלַּי, from the second סַל, סַלּוֹן, and סִלּוֹן, סַלְסִלּוֹת.
