Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חָרַץ fut. יֶחֱרַץ

(1) properly to cut, to out into; kindred to חָרַשׁ, חָרַת. (LXX. sometimes render it συντέμνειν, Proverbs 21:5; Isaiah 10:23, 28:22.) Hence חָרִיץ a slice. Specially

(a) to cut skin deep, to wound slightly. (Arabic حرص to cut the skin, حَارِصَةُ to wound skin deep, حَرِصَةُ such a wound on the head.) Part. חָרוּץ somewhat wounded, Levit. 22:22.

(b) to dig, see חָרוּץ No. 1.

(2) to sharpen, to bring to a point (comp. Arab. خَرِيصُ the point of a spear. Schult. on Proverbs 21:5). Only occurring in the proverbial expression, Exodus 11:7, לְכֹל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא יֶחֱרַץ כֶּלֶב לְשֹׁנוֹ “against all the children of Israel not even a dog shall sharpen his tongue,” i.e. no one shall oppose or provoke them however slightly. Vulg. non mutiet canis, Joshua 10:21 compare Jdt_11:13 (19 ). Hence חָרוּץ No. 2.

(3) This word is also figuratively used to decide, to determine. 1 Kings 20:40, “this is thy sentence, אַתָּה חָרַצְתָּ thou thyself has decided it.” Job 14:5, אִם חֲרוּצִים יָמָיו “seeing that his days are determined.” Isaiah 10:22, כִּלָּיוֹן חָרוּץ “destruction is decreed.” Compare Niphal, and חָרוּץ No. 3.

(4) from the idea of sharpening; to be sharp, as applied to taste, to be sour, whence חַרְצַנִּים sour grapes [or grape stones]; and also

(5) to be eager, i.e. strenuous, active, diligent (Germ. fich’s fauer werden laffen). Hence adj. חָרוּץ eager, which see; and once as a verb. 2 Samuel 5:24, אָז־תֶּחֱרַץ “then be thou diligent,” on the alert; i.e. hasten. (Arab. حَرَصَ to long for earnestly; to be impelled by eagerness and desire. VIII. to desire, to long for, to be earnest about, حِْرصُ desire, pursuit.)

Niphal, part. נֶחֱרָצָה construed נֶחֱרֶצֶת something determined, decreed, especially in the phrase כָּלָה וְנֶחֱרָצָה “destruction, and that which is decreed;” ἓν διὰ δυοῖν, for the destruction decreed (by God). Isaiah 10:23, 28:22 Daniel 9:27, 11:36.- Daniel 9:26, נֶחֱרֶצֶת שׁוֹמֵמוֹת [“a decree of desolations,” i.e.] “the desolations decreed.”

Derivative nouns חֶרוּץ I. and II., חָרִיץ, חַרְצַנִּים.
