Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יָצַר fut. וַיִּיצֶר, וַיִּצֶר, also יִצֹּר Isaiah 44:12 (so also Isaiah 42:6, 49:8 אֶצָּרְךָ which, in my Commentary, I have with others incorrectly derived from נָצַר); see No. 2.

(1) to form, to fashion, as a potter, clay (see יוֹצֵר a potter), Genesis 2:7, 8:19 an artist, statues, Isaiah 44:9, 10 Isaiah 44:10, 12 Isaiah 44:12 arms, Isaiah 54:17. Often used of God as the Creator, Psalms 94:9, יוֹצֵר עַיִן “he who formed the eye,” Psalms 33:15, 74:17 99:5 Isaiah 45:7, 18 Isaiah 45:18, in which sense it is often joined with בָּרָא. Part. יוֹצֵר as a subst. is

(a) a potter, Psalms 94:9, 20 Psalms 94:20 whence כְּלִי יוֹצֵר a vessel of earthenware, Psalms 2:9; 2 Samuel 17:28.

(b) an artist, a maker of statues, Isaiah 44:9.

(c) creator, Isaiah 43:1, 44:2, 24 Isaiah 44:24. As to the word יוֹצֵר Zechariah 11:13, see p. 343, B. [The use made of the passage in the New Test. proves that the word here simply means the potter.]

(2) Followed by לְ to form for any thing, to destine for any thing; Isaiah 44:21, יְצַרְתִּיךָ לְעֶבֶד לִי “I have formed thee, that thou mayest be my servant;” Isaiah 42:6, אֶצָּרְךָ וְאֶתֶּנְךָ לִבְרִית עֶם “I have formed thee, and made thee the author of a covenant of the people;” Isaiah 49:5, Isaiah 49:8, 45:18 (fin.). Often used of things predestined, predetermined by God, (opp. to their event, result), Isaiah 22:11, 37:26 43:7 46:11.

(3) to form in the mind, to devise, to plan, 2 Kings 19:25 עַל against any one, Jeremiah 18:11; Psalms 94:20; Jeremiah 1:5 (קרי).

Niphal, pass. of Kal No. 1, to be formed, created, Isaiah 43:10.

Pual יֻצַּר pass. of Kal No. 3, to be predestined, Psalms 139:16.

Hophal, i.q. Niphal, Isaiah 54:17.

Derivatives, יֵצֶר, יְצֻרִים.

[In Thes. this root is not divided into two parts.]

II.

יָצַר i.q. צוּר, but intrans. to be straitened, to be narrow, (comp. Gramm. § 76, Lehrg. § 112). Only found in fut. יֵצַר, pl. יֵצְרוּ Proverbs 4:12; Isaiah 49:19; Job 18:7. Elsewhere impers. וַיֵּצֶר לוֹ it was narrow to him (in pret. צַר לוֹ), i.e.

(a) to be in distress, Judges 2:15, 10:9 Job 20:22.

(b) to be in perplexity, Genesis 32:8 (and so in f. וַתֵּצֶר לוֹ 1 Samuel 30:6).
