[סָרַךְ] noun masculine chief, overseer (ᵑ7 id. (=Biblical Hebrew שֹׁטֵר); etymology dubious; probably with Bev^Dn Dr^Dn Andr^{M 75*, loan-word} from Persian s¹r (and * sarak ?), head, chief); — plural absolute סָֽרְכִין Daniel 6:3, emphatic סָֽרְכַיָּא Daniel 6:4; Daniel 6:5; Daniel 6:7, construct סָֽרְבֵי Daniel 6:8.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

סָרַךְ or סָרֵךְ only in plur. סָרְכִין Chald. a royal minister of the Persians, Daniel 6:3, seqq. In Targ. סִרְכָא, סַרְכָן plur. סָרְכִין, stands for the Hebr. שׁוֹטֵר governor, overseer, magistrate. I cannot determine anything as to the etymology. It seems, however, the most simple to regard סָרַךְ as compounded of שַׂר سر a prince, and the servile termination, used in Persic, ־ַךְ, as in the word גַּנְזַךְ.
