Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יָהּ Jah a word abbreviated from יְהֹוָה Jehovah, or rather from the more ancient pronunciation יַהֲוֹה or יַהֲוֶה [this rests on the assumption that one of these contradictory pronunciations is the more ancient], whence by apocope יָה֫וּ (as יִשְׁתַּחוּ for יִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה) then by the omission of the unaccented וּ, יָהּ, Lehrg. 157. Either of these forms is used promiscuously at the end of many proper names, as אֵלִיָּהוּ, and אֵלִיָּה, יִרְמְיָהוּ and יִרְמְיָה, יְשַׁעְיָהוּ and יְשַׁעְיָה, the final ה in these compounds being always without Mappik. יָהּ is principally used in certain customary phrases, as הַלְלוּ־יָהּ “praise ye Jehovah!” Psalms 104:35, 105:45 106:1, 48 Psalms 106:48, 111:1 112:1 113:1, etc. Besides e.g. Psalms 89:9, 94:7, 12 Psalms 94:12; Isaiah 38:11; Exodus 15:2, עָזִּי וְזִמְרָת יָהּ “my strength and my song is Jehovah.” Psalms 118:14 Isai. 12:2 Psalms 68:5, בְּיָהּ שְׁמוֹ “Jah is his name” (comp. בְּ let. D). Isaiah 26:4. (In a few doxological forms this word is also retained in Syriac, as ܠܝܰܗ ܕܘܽܟܣܙܳ glory to Jehovah, Assem. Bibl. Orient. ii. 230; iii. 579.)
