It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord .

Chapter 2

The Grain Offering

1 "‘When anyone brings a grain offering(a) to the Lord , their offering is to be of the finest flour.(b) They are to pour olive oil(c) on it,(d) put incense on it(e) 2 and take it to Aaron's sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour(f) and oil, together with all the incense,(g) and burn this as a memorial[a] portion(h) on the altar, a food offering,(i) an aroma pleasing to the Lord .(j) 3 The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;(k) it is a most holy(l) part of the food offerings presented to the Lord .

4 "‘If you bring a grain offering baked in an oven,(m) it is to consist of the finest flour: either thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in or thin loaves(n) made without yeast and brushed with olive oil.(o) 5 If your grain offering is prepared on a griddle,(p) it is to be made of the finest flour mixed with oil, and without yeast. 6 Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. 7 If your grain offering is cooked in a pan,(q) it is to be made of the finest flour and some olive oil. 8 Bring the grain offering made of these things to the Lord ; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar. 9 He shall take out the memorial portion(r) from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord .(s) 10 The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons;(t) it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord .(u)

11 "‘Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast,(v) for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord . 12 You may bring them to the Lord as an offering of the firstfruits,(w) but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. 13 Season all your grain offerings with salt.(x) Do not leave the salt of the covenant(y) of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.

Proverbs 19

Chapter 19

1 Better the poor whose walk is blameless
     than a fool whose lips are perverse.(a)

2 Desire without knowledge is not good—
     how much more will hasty feet miss the way!(b)

3 A person's own folly(c) leads to their ruin,
     yet their heart rages against the Lord .(d)

4 Wealth attracts many friends,
     but even the closest friend of the poor person deserts them.(e)

5 A false witness(f) will not go unpunished,(g)
     and whoever pours out lies will not go free.(h)

6 Many curry favor with a ruler,(i)
     and everyone is the friend of one who gives gifts.(j)

7 The poor are shunned by all their relatives—
     how much more do their friends avoid them!(k)
Though the poor pursue them with pleading,
     they are nowhere to be found.[a](l)

8 The one who gets wisdom loves life;
     the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.(m)

9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
     and whoever pours out lies will perish.(n)

10 It is not fitting for a fool(o) to live in luxury—
     how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!(p)

11 A person's wisdom yields patience;(q)
     it is to one's glory to overlook an offense.

12 A king's rage is like the roar of a lion,(r)
     but his favor is like dew(s) on the grass.(t)

13 A foolish child is a father's ruin,(u)
     and a quarrelsome wife is like
     the constant dripping of a leaky roof.(v)

14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents,(w)
     but a prudent wife is from the Lord .(x)

15 Laziness brings on deep sleep,
     and the shiftless go hungry.(y)

16 Whoever keeps commandments keeps their life,
     but whoever shows contempt for their ways will die.(z)

17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord ,(aa)
     and he will reward them for what they have done.(ab)

18 Discipline your children, for in that there is hope;
     do not be a willing party to their death.(ac)

19 A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty;
     rescue them, and you will have to do it again.

20 Listen to advice and accept discipline,(ad)
     and at the end you will be counted among the wise.(ae)

21 Many are the plans in a person's heart,
     but it is the Lord 's purpose that prevails.(af)

22 What a person desires is unfailing love[b];
     better to be poor than a liar.

23 The fear of the Lord leads to life;
     then one rests content, untouched by trouble.(ag)

24 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
     he will not even bring it back to his mouth!(ah)

25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
     rebuke the discerning,(ai) and they will gain knowledge.(aj)

26 Whoever robs their father and drives out their mother(ak)
     is a child who brings shame and disgrace.

27 Stop listening to instruction, my son,(al)
     and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

28 A corrupt witness mocks at justice,
     and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.(am)

29 Penalties are prepared for mockers,
     and beatings for the backs of fools.(an)

Matthew 8:14-34

Chapter 8

14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(q) 17 This was to fulfill(r) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

"He took up our infirmities
     and bore our diseases."[b](s)

The Cost of Following Jesus(t)

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(u) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."

20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(v) has no place to lay his head."

21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me,(w) and let the dead bury their own dead."

Jesus Calms the Storm(x)(y)

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"

26 He replied, "You of little faith,(z) why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(aa)

27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(ab)

28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[c] two demon-possessed(ac) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 "What do you want with us,(ad) Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"(ae)

30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."

32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(af)
