Numbers 25-27

Chapter 25

Moab Seduces Israel

1 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(a) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(b) with Moabite(c) women,(d) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices(e) to their gods.(f) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to(g) the Baal of Peor.(h) And the Lord 's anger burned against them.

4 The Lord said to Moses, "Take all the leaders(i) of these people, kill them and expose(j) them in broad daylight before the Lord ,(k) so that the Lord 's fierce anger(l) may turn away from Israel."

5 So Moses said to Israel's judges, "Each of you must put to death(m) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor."(n)

6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(o) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(p) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas(q) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(r) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman's stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(s) 9 but those who died in the plague(t) numbered 24,000.(u)

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 "Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(v) Since he was as zealous for my honor(w) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(x) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(y) because he was zealous(z) for the honor(aa) of his God and made atonement(ab) for the Israelites."(ac)

14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(ad) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(ae) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(af) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(ag)

16 The Lord said to Moses,(ah) 17 "Treat the Midianites(ai) as enemies(aj) and kill them.(ak) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(al) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident."

Chapter 26

Chapter 27

Zelophehad's Daughters(a)

1 The daughters of Zelophehad(b) son of Hepher,(c) the son of Gilead,(d) the son of Makir,(e) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. Give us property among our father's relatives."

5 So Moses brought their case(l) before the Lord ,(m) 6 and the Lord said to him, 7 "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(n) among their father's relatives and give their father's inheritance to them.(o)

8 "Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(p) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.'"

(These were the waters of Meribah(y) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord , 16 "May the Lord , the God who gives breath to all living things,(z) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord 's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd."(aa)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[a](ab) and lay your hand on him.(ac) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(ad) in their presence.(ae) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(af) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(ag) of the Urim(ah) before the Lord . At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in."

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(ai) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Song of Solomon 6:4-8:4

Chapter 6

He

4 You are as beautiful as Tirzah,(h) my darling,
     as lovely as Jerusalem,(i)
     as majestic as troops with banners.(j)
5 Turn your eyes from me;
     they overwhelm me.
Your hair is like a flock of goats
     descending from Gilead.(k)
6 Your teeth are like a flock of sheep
     coming up from the washing.
Each has its twin,
     not one of them is missing.(l)
7 Your temples behind your veil(m)
     are like the halves of a pomegranate.(n)
8 Sixty queens(o) there may be,
     and eighty concubines,(p)
     and virgins beyond number;
9 but my dove,(q) my perfect one,(r) is unique,
     the only daughter of her mother,
     the favorite of the one who bore her.(s)
The young women saw her and called her blessed;
     the queens and concubines praised her.

Friends

10 Who is this that appears like the dawn,
     fair as the moon, bright as the sun,
     majestic as the stars in procession?

He

11 I went down to the grove of nut trees
     to look at the new growth in the valley,
to see if the vines had budded
     or the pomegranates were in bloom.(t)
12 Before I realized it,
     my desire set me among the royal chariots of my people.[a]

Friends

13 Come back, come back, O Shulammite;
     come back, come back, that we may gaze on you!

He

Why would you gaze on the Shulammite
     as on the dance(u) of Mahanaim?[b]

Chapter 7

1 [a]How beautiful your sandaled feet,
     O prince's(a) daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels,
     the work of an artist's hands.
2 Your navel is a rounded goblet
     that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat
     encircled by lilies.
3 Your breasts(b) are like two fawns,
     like twin fawns of a gazelle.
4 Your neck is like an ivory tower.(c)
Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon(d)
     by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon(e)
     looking toward Damascus.
5 Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.(f)
     Your hair is like royal tapestry;
     the king is held captive by its tresses.
6 How beautiful(g) you are and how pleasing,
     my love, with your delights!(h)
7 Your stature is like that of the palm,
     and your breasts(i) like clusters of fruit.
8 I said, "I will climb the palm tree;
     I will take hold of its fruit."
May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine,
     the fragrance of your breath like apples,(j)
9       and your mouth like the best wine.

She

May the wine go straight to my beloved,(k)
     flowing gently over lips and teeth.[b]
10 I belong to my beloved,
     and his desire(l) is for me.(m)
11 Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside,
     let us spend the night in the villages.[c]
12 Let us go early to the vineyards(n)
     to see if the vines have budded,(o)
if their blossoms(p) have opened,
     and if the pomegranates(q) are in bloom(r)
     there I will give you my love.
13 The mandrakes(s) send out their fragrance,
     and at our door is every delicacy,
both new and old,
     that I have stored up for you, my beloved.(t)

Chapter 8

1 If only you were to me like a brother,
     who was nursed at my mother's breasts!
Then, if I found you outside,
     I would kiss you,
     and no one would despise me.
2 I would lead you
     and bring you to my mother's house(a)
     she who has taught me.
I would give you spiced wine to drink,
     the nectar of my pomegranates.
3 His left arm is under my head
     and his right arm embraces me.(b)
4 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you:
     Do not arouse or awaken love
     until it so desires.(c)

Matthew 24:1-31

Chapter 24

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(a)

1 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(b) every one will be thrown down."

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(c) the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(d) and of the end of the age?"(e)

4 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.(f) 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many.(g) 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(h) There will be famines(i) and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9 "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(j) and put to death,(k) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(l) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(m) will appear and deceive many people.(n) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(o) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(p) will be preached in the whole world(q) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 "So when you see standing in the holy place(r) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,'[a](s) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(t) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(u) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(v)

22 "If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(w) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!' or, ‘There he is!' do not believe it.(x) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(y) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

26 "So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,' do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27 For as lightning(z) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming(aa) of the Son of Man.(ab) 28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.(ac)

29 "Immediately after the distress of those days

"‘the sun will be darkened,
     and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
     and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'[b](ad)

30 "Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn(ae) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,(af) with power and great glory.[d] 31 And he will send his angels(ag) with a loud trumpet call,(ah) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
