Deuteronomy 15-16

Chapter 15

The Year for Canceling Debts(a)

1 At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.(b) 2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord 's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. 3 You may require payment from a foreigner,(c) but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. 4 However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless(d) you, 5 if only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow(e) all these commands I am giving you today. 6 For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.(f)

7 If anyone is poor(g) among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted(h) toward them. 8 Rather, be openhanded(i) and freely lend them whatever they need. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: "The seventh year, the year for canceling debts,(j) is near," so that you do not show ill will(k) toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.(l) 10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart;(m) then because of this the Lord your God will bless(n) you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people(o) in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.(p)

Freeing Servants(q)(r)

12 If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free.(s) 13 And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. 14 Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor(t) and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were slaves(u) in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you.(v) That is why I give you this command today.

16 But if your servant says to you, "I do not want to leave you," because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.

18 Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.

The Firstborn Animals

19 Set apart for the Lord (w) your God every firstborn male(x) of your herds and flocks.(y) Do not put the firstborn of your cows to work, and do not shear the firstborn of your sheep.(z) 20 Each year you and your family are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose.(aa) 21 If an animal has a defect,(ab) is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the Lord your God.(ac) 22 You are to eat it in your own towns. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it, as if it were gazelle or deer.(ad) 23 But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.(ae)

Chapter 16

The Passover(a)

1 Observe the month of Aviv(b) and celebrate the Passover(c) of the Lord your God, because in the month of Aviv he brought you out of Egypt by night. 2 Sacrifice as the Passover to the Lord your God an animal from your flock or herd at the place the Lord will choose as a dwelling for his Name.(d) 3 Do not eat it with bread made with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction,(e) because you left Egypt in haste(f)—so that all the days of your life you may remember the time of your departure from Egypt.(g) 4 Let no yeast be found in your possession in all your land for seven days. Do not let any of the meat you sacrifice on the evening(h) of the first day remain until morning.(i)

5 You must not sacrifice the Passover in any town the Lord your God gives you 6 except in the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name. There you must sacrifice the Passover in the evening, when the sun goes down, on the anniversary[a](j) of your departure from Egypt. 7 Roast(k) it and eat it at the place the Lord your God will choose. Then in the morning return to your tents. 8 For six days eat unleavened bread and on the seventh day hold an assembly(l) to the Lord your God and do no work.(m)

The Festival of Weeks(n)

9 Count off seven weeks(o) from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain.(p) 10 Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you. 11 And rejoice(q) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name(r)—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, the Levites(s) in your towns, and the foreigners,(t) the fatherless and the widows living among you.(u) 12 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt,(v) and follow carefully these decrees.

The Festival of Tabernacles(w)

13 Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor(x) and your winepress.(y) 14 Be joyful(z) at your festival—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. 15 For seven days celebrate the festival to the Lord your God at the place the Lord will choose. For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy(aa) will be complete.

16 Three times a year all your men must appear(ab) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(ac) the Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles.(ad) No one should appear before the Lord empty-handed:(ae) 17 Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you.

Judges

18 Appoint judges(af) and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly.(ag) 19 Do not pervert justice(ah) or show partiality.(ai) Do not accept a bribe,(aj) for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent. 20 Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Worshiping Other Gods

21 Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole(ak) beside the altar you build to the Lord your God,(al) 22 and do not erect a sacred stone,(am) for these the Lord your God hates.

Job 11

Chapter 11

Zophar

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite(a) replied:

2 "Are all these words to go unanswered?(b)
Is this talker to be vindicated?(c)
3 Will your idle talk(d) reduce others to silence?
Will no one rebuke you when you mock?(e)
4 You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless(f)
and I am pure(g) in your sight.'
5 Oh, how I wish that God would speak,(h)
that he would open his lips against you
6 and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom,(i)
for true wisdom has two sides.
Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.(j)

7 "Can you fathom(k) the mysteries of God?
Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
8 They are higher(l) than the heavens(m) above—what can you do?
They are deeper than the depths below(n)—what can you know?(o)
9 Their measure(p) is longer than the earth
     and wider than the sea.(q)

10 "If he comes along and confines you in prison
and convenes a court, who can oppose him?(r)
11 Surely he recognizes deceivers;
and when he sees evil, does he not take note?(s)
12 But the witless can no more become wise
     than a wild donkey's colt(t) can be born human.[a](u)

13 "Yet if you devote your heart(v) to him
and stretch out your hands(w) to him,(x)
14 if you put away(y) the sin that is in your hand
and allow no evil(z) to dwell in your tent,(aa)
15 then, free of fault, you will lift up your face;(ab)
you will stand firm(ac) and without fear.(ad)
16 You will surely forget your trouble,(ae)
recalling it only as waters gone by.(af)
17 Life will be brighter than noonday,(ag)
and darkness will become like morning.(ah)
18 You will be secure, because there is hope;
you will look about you and take your rest(ai) in safety.(aj)
19 You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,(ak)
and many will court your favor.(al)
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail,(am)
     and escape will elude them;(an)
their hope will become a dying gasp."(ao)

Acts 2:14-47

Chapter 2

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!(p) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 "‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(q)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(r)
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
     and they will prophesy.(s)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,(t)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
     and the moon to blood(u)
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord(v) will be saved.'[c](w)

22 "Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(x) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(y) which God did among you through him,(z) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(aa) and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(ab) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(ac) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(ad) 25 David said about him:

"‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
     I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.(ae)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.'[e](af)

29 "Fellow Israelites,(ag) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(ah) David died and was buried,(ai) and his tomb is here(aj) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(ak) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(al) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(am) and we are all witnesses(an) of it. 33 Exalted(ao) to the right hand of God,(ap) he has received from the Father(aq) the promised Holy Spirit(ar) and has poured out(as) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

"‘The Lord said to my Lord:
     "Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
     a footstool for your feet."'[f](at)

36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(au) and Messiah."(av)

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"(aw)

38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized,(ax) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(ay) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(az) 39 The promise is for you and your children(ba) and for all who are far off(bb)—for all whom the Lord our God will call."

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."(bc) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(bd) that day.

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching(be) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(bf) and to prayer.(bg) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(bh) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(bi) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(bj) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(bk) They broke bread(bl) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(bm) And the Lord added to their number(bn) daily those who were being saved.
