2 Chronicles 14-15

Chapter 14

1 [a]And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. Asa his son succeeded him as king, and in his days the country was at peace for ten years.

Asa King of Judah(a)

2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God.(b) 3 He removed the foreign altars(c) and the high places, smashed the sacred stones(d) and cut down the Asherah poles.[b](e) 4 He commanded Judah to seek the Lord ,(f) the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. 5 He removed the high places(g) and incense altars(h) in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 6 He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the Lord gave him rest.(i)

7 "Let us build up these towns," he said to Judah, "and put walls around them, with towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the Lord our God; we sought him and he has given us rest(j) on every side." So they built and prospered.

8 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand(k) men from Judah, equipped with large shields and with spears, and two hundred and eighty thousand from Benjamin, armed with small shields and with bows. All these were brave fighting men.

9 Zerah the Cushite(l) marched out against them with an army of thousands upon thousands and three hundred chariots, and came as far as Mareshah.(m) 10 Asa went out to meet him, and they took up battle positions in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.

11 Then Asa called(n) to the Lord his God and said, " Lord , there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us,(o) Lord our God, for we rely(p) on you, and in your name(q) we have come against this vast army. Lord , you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail(r) against you."

12 The Lord struck down(s) the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled, 13 and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar.(t) Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed(u) before the Lord and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder.(v) 14 They destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for the terror(w) of the Lord had fallen on them. They looted all these villages, since there was much plunder there. 15 They also attacked the camps of the herders and carried off droves of sheep and goats and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

Chapter 15

Asa's Reform(a)

1 The Spirit of God came on(b) Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you(c) when you are with him.(d) If you seek(e) him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.(f) 3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach(g) and without the law.(h) 4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord , the God of Israel, and sought him,(i) and he was found by them. 5 In those days it was not safe to travel about,(j) for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. 6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another,(k) because God was troubling them with every kind of distress. 7 But as for you, be strong(l) and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."(m)

8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of[a] Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols(n) from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured(o) in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar(p) of the Lord that was in front of the portico of the Lord 's temple.

9 Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers(q) had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.

10 They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month(r) of the fifteenth year of Asa's reign. 11 At that time they sacrificed to the Lord seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder(s) they had brought back. 12 They entered into a covenant(t) to seek the Lord ,(u) the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. 13 All who would not seek the Lord , the God of Israel, were to be put to death,(v) whether small or great, man or woman. 14 They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. 15 All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God(w) eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest(x) on every side.

16 King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maakah(y) from her position as queen mother,(z) because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah.(aa) Asa cut it down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley.(ab) 17 Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa's heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 18 He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.(ac)

19 There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa's reign.

Psalms 77

Chapter 77

Psalm 77[a]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm.

1 I cried out to God(a) for help;
     I cried out to God to hear me.
2 When I was in distress,(b) I sought the Lord;
     at night(c) I stretched out untiring hands,(d)
     and I would not be comforted.(e)

3 I remembered(f) you, God, and I groaned;(g)
     I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.[b](h)
4 You kept my eyes from closing;
     I was too troubled to speak.(i)
5 I thought about the former days,(j)
     the years of long ago;
6 I remembered my songs in the night.
     My heart meditated and my spirit asked:

7 "Will the Lord reject forever?(k)
     Will he never show his favor(l) again?
8 Has his unfailing love(m) vanished forever?
     Has his promise(n) failed for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be merciful?(o)
     Has he in anger withheld his compassion?(p)"

10 Then I thought, "To this I will appeal:
     the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.(q)
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord ;
     yes, I will remember your miracles(r) of long ago.
12 I will consider(s) all your works
     and meditate on all your mighty deeds."(t)

13 Your ways, God, are holy.
     What god is as great as our God?(u)
14 You are the God who performs miracles;(v)
     you display your power among the peoples.
15 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,(w)
     the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

16 The waters(x) saw you, God,
     the waters saw you and writhed;(y)
     the very depths were convulsed.
17 The clouds poured down water,(z)
     the heavens resounded with thunder;(aa)
     your arrows(ab) flashed back and forth.
18 Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind,(ac)
     your lightning(ad) lit up the world;
     the earth trembled and quaked.(ae)
19 Your path(af) led through the sea,(ag)
     your way through the mighty waters,
     though your footprints were not seen.

20 You led your people(ah) like a flock(ai)
     by the hand of Moses and Aaron.(aj)

John 12:1-26

Chapter 12

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(a)

1 Six days before the Passover,(b) Jesus came to Bethany,(c) where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served,(d) while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume;(e) she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair.(f) And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,(g) objected, 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.[b]" 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,(h) he used to help himself to what was put into it.

7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.(i) 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c](j) but you will not always have me."

9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.(k) 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him(l) many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.(m)

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(n)

12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches(o) and went out to meet him, shouting,

"Hosanna![d]"

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"[e](p)

"Blessed is the king of Israel!"(q)

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:

15 "Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
     see, your king is coming,
     seated on a donkey's colt."[f](r)

16 At first his disciples did not understand all this.(s) Only after Jesus was glorified(t) did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.

17 Now the crowd that was with him(u) when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,(v) went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"(w)

Jesus Predicts His Death

20 Now there were some Greeks(x) among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida(y) in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus." 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

23 Jesus replied, "The hour(z) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.(aa) 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,(ab) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it(ac) for eternal life.(ad) 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.(ae) My Father will honor the one who serves me.
