2 Chronicles 19

Chapter 19

1 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, 2 Jehu(a) the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, "Should you help the wicked(b) and love[a] those who hate the Lord ?(c) Because of this, the wrath(d) of the Lord is on you. 3 There is, however, some good(e) in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles(f) and have set your heart on seeking God.(g)"

Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges

4 Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord , the God of their ancestors. 5 He appointed judges(h) in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah. 6 He told them, "Consider carefully what you do,(i) because you are not judging for mere mortals(j) but for the Lord , who is with you whenever you give a verdict. 7 Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice(k) or partiality(l) or bribery."

8 In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites,(m) priests(n) and heads of Israelite families to administer(o) the law of the Lord and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem. 9 He gave them these orders: "You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord . 10 In every case that comes before you from your people who live in the cities—whether bloodshed or other concerns of the law, commands, decrees or regulations—you are to warn them not to sin against the Lord ;(p) otherwise his wrath will come on you and your people. Do this, and you will not sin.

11 "Amariah the chief priest will be over you in any matter concerning the Lord , and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will be over you in any matter concerning the king, and the Levites will serve as officials before you. Act with courage,(q) and may the Lord be with those who do well."

Psalms 78:38-55

Chapter 78

38 Yet he was merciful;(az)
     he forgave(ba) their iniquities(bb)
     and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(bc)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(bd)
a passing breeze(be) that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled(bf) against him in the wilderness(bg)
and grieved him(bh) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(bi)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(bj)
42 They did not remember(bk) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(bl)
43 the day he displayed his signs(bm) in Egypt,
his wonders(bn) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(bo)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(bp) that devoured them,
     and frogs(bq) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(br)
     their produce to the locust.(bs)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(bt)
     and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(bu) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(bv)
     his wrath, indignation and hostility—
     a band of destroying angels.(bw)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(bx)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(by)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(bz)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(ca) their enemies.(cb)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(cc) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(cd) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(ce)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

John 13:21-38

Chapter 13

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(ab) and testified, "Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me."(ac)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(ad) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"(ae)

26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(af) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(ag)

So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly." 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(ah) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(ai) or to give something to the poor.(aj) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(ak)

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial(al)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man(am) is glorified(an) and God is glorified in him.(ao) 32 If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,(ap) and will glorify him at once.

33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(aq)

34 "A new command(ar) I give you: Love one another.(as) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(at) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."(au)

36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?"(av)

Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(aw) but you will follow later."(ax)

37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(ay)
