Chapter 23
A Prophecy Against Tyre
1 A prophecy against Tyre:(a)
Wail,(b) you ships(c) of Tarshish!(d)
For Tyre is destroyed(e)
and left without house or harbor.
From the land of Cyprus
word has come to them.
2 Be silent,(f) you people of the island
and you merchants(g) of Sidon,(h)
whom the seafarers have enriched.
3 On the great waters
came the grain of the Shihor;(i)
the harvest of the Nile[a](j) was the revenue of Tyre,(k)
and she became the marketplace of the nations.
4 Be ashamed, Sidon,(l) and you fortress of the sea,
for the sea has spoken:
"I have neither been in labor nor given birth;(m)
I have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters."
5 When word comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish(n) at the report from Tyre.(o)
6 Cross over to Tarshish;(p)
wail, you people of the island.
7 Is this your city of revelry,(q)
the old, old city,
whose feet have taken her
to settle in far-off lands?
8 Who planned this against Tyre,
the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants(r) are princes,
whose traders(s) are renowned in the earth?
9 The
Lord
Almighty planned(t) it,
to bring down(u) her pride in all her splendor
and to humble(v) all who are renowned(w) on the earth.
10 Till[b] your land as they do along the Nile,
Daughter Tarshish,
for you no longer have a harbor.
11 The
Lord
has stretched out his hand(x) over the sea
and made its kingdoms tremble.(y)
He has given an order concerning Phoenicia
that her fortresses be destroyed.(z)
12 He said, "No more of your reveling,(aa)
Virgin Daughter(ab) Sidon, now crushed!
"Up, cross over to Cyprus;(ac)
even there you will find no rest."
13 Look at the land of the Babylonians,[c](ad)
this people that is now of no account!
The Assyrians(ae) have made it
a place for desert creatures;(af)
they raised up their siege towers,(ag)
they stripped its fortresses bare
and turned it into a ruin.(ah)
14 Wail, you ships(ai) of Tarshish;(aj)
your fortress is destroyed!(ak)
15 At that time Tyre(al) will be forgotten for seventy years,(am) the span of a king's life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
16 "Take up a harp, walk through the city,
you forgotten prostitute;(an)
play the harp well, sing many a song,
so that you will be remembered."
17 At the end of seventy years,(ao) the Lord will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution(ap) and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.(aq) 18 Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the Lord ;(ar) they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the Lord ,(as) for abundant food and fine clothes.(at)
Chapter 24
The Lord's Devastation of the Earth
1 See, the
Lord
is going to lay waste the earth(a)
and devastate(b) it;
he will ruin its face
and scatter(c) its inhabitants—
2 it will be the same
for priest as for people,(d)
for the master as for his servant,
for the mistress as for her servant,
for seller as for buyer,(e)
for borrower as for lender,
for debtor as for creditor.(f)
3 The earth will be completely laid waste(g)
and totally plundered.(h)
The
Lord
has spoken(i) this word.
4 The earth dries up(j) and withers,(k)
the world languishes and withers,
the heavens(l) languish with the earth.(m)
5 The earth is defiled(n) by its people;
they have disobeyed(o) the laws,
violated the statutes
and broken the everlasting covenant.(p)
6 Therefore a curse(q) consumes the earth;
its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up,(r)
and very few are left.
7 The new wine dries up(s) and the vine withers;(t)
all the merrymakers groan.(u)
8 The joyful timbrels(v) are stilled,
the noise(w) of the revelers(x) has stopped,
the joyful harp(y) is silent.(z)
9 No longer do they drink wine(aa) with a song;
the beer is bitter(ab) to its drinkers.
10 The ruined city(ac) lies desolate;(ad)
the entrance to every house is barred.
11 In the streets they cry out(ae) for wine;(af)
all joy turns to gloom,(ag)
all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins,(ah)
its gate(ai) is battered to pieces.
13 So will it be on the earth
and among the nations,
as when an olive tree is beaten,(aj)
or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.(ak)
14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy;(al)
from the west(am) they acclaim the
Lord
's majesty.
15 Therefore in the east(an) give glory(ao) to the
Lord
;
exalt(ap) the name(aq) of the
Lord
, the God of Israel,
in the islands(ar) of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth(as) we hear singing:(at)
"Glory(au) to the Righteous One."(av)
But I said, "I waste away, I waste away!(aw)
Woe(ax) to me!
The treacherous(ay) betray!
With treachery the treacherous betray!(az)"
17 Terror(ba) and pit and snare(bb) await you,
people of the earth.(bc)
18 Whoever flees(bd) at the sound of terror
will fall into a pit;(be)
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare.(bf)
The floodgates of the heavens(bg) are opened,
the foundations of the earth shake.(bh)
19 The earth is broken up,(bi)
the earth is split asunder,(bj)
the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth reels like a drunkard,(bk)
it sways like a hut(bl) in the wind;
so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion(bm)
that it falls(bn)—never to rise again.(bo)
21 In that day(bp) the
Lord
will punish(bq)
the powers(br) in the heavens above
and the kings(bs) on the earth below.
22 They will be herded together
like prisoners(bt) bound in a dungeon;(bu)
they will be shut up in prison
and be punished[a] after many days.(bv)
23 The moon will be dismayed,
the sun(bw) ashamed;
for the
Lord
Almighty will reign(bx)
on Mount Zion(by) and in Jerusalem,
and before its elders—with great glory.(bz)
Psalms 116
Chapter 116
Psalm 116
1 I love the
Lord
,(a) for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry(b) for mercy.(c)
2 Because he turned his ear(d) to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The cords of death(e) entangled me,
the anguish of the grave came over me;
I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name(f) of the
Lord
:
"
Lord
, save me!(g)"
5 The
Lord
is gracious and righteous;(h)
our God is full of compassion.(i)
6 The
Lord
protects the unwary;
when I was brought low,(j) he saved me.(k)
7 Return to your rest,(l) my soul,
for the
Lord
has been good(m) to you.
8 For you,
Lord
, have delivered me(n) from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling,
9 that I may walk before the
Lord
(o)
in the land of the living.(p)
10 I trusted(q) in the
Lord
when I said,
"I am greatly afflicted";(r)
11 in my alarm I said,
"Everyone is a liar."(s)
12 What shall I return to the
Lord
for all his goodness(t) to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name(u) of the
Lord
.
14 I will fulfill my vows(v) to the
Lord
in the presence of all his people.
15 Precious in the sight(w) of the
Lord
is the death of his faithful servants.(x)
16 Truly I am your servant,
Lord
;(y)
I serve you just as my mother did;(z)
you have freed me from my chains.(aa)
17 I will sacrifice a thank offering(ab) to you
and call on the name of the
Lord
.
18 I will fulfill my vows(ac) to the
Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts(ad) of the house of the
Lord
—
in your midst, Jerusalem.(ae)
Praise the Lord .[a]
1 Thessalonians 5
Chapter 5
The Day of the Lord
1 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(a) we do not need to write to you,(b) 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord(c) will come like a thief in the night.(d) 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety,"(e) destruction will come on them suddenly,(f) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.(g)
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness(h) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.(i) 5 You are all children of the light(j) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,(k) but let us be awake(l) and sober.(m) 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.(n) 8 But since we belong to the day,(o) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,(p) and the hope of salvation(q) as a helmet.(r) 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath(s) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.(t) 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.(u) 11 Therefore encourage one another(v) and build each other up,(w) just as in fact you are doing.
Final Instructions
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard(x) among you, who care for you in the Lord(y) and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.(z) 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle(aa) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,(ab) be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,(ac) but always strive to do what is good for each other(ad) and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always,(ae) 17 pray continually,(af) 18 give thanks in all circumstances;(ag) for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.(ah) 20 Do not treat prophecies(ai) with contempt 21 but test them all;(aj) hold on to what is good,(ak) 22 reject every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace,(al) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul(am) and body be kept blameless(an) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(ao) 24 The one who calls(ap) you is faithful,(aq) and he will do it.(ar)
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.(as) 26 Greet all God's people with a holy kiss.(at) 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.(au)
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.(av)
