Proverbs 8:12-11:11
Chapter 8
12 "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;
I possess knowledge and discretion.(j)
13 To fear the
Lord
(k) is to hate evil;(l)
I hate(m) pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.
14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine;
I have insight, I have power.(n)
15 By me kings reign
and rulers(o) issue decrees that are just;
16 by me princes govern,(p)
and nobles—all who rule on earth.[b]
17 I love those who love me,(q)
and those who seek me find me.(r)
18 With me are riches and honor,(s)
enduring wealth and prosperity.(t)
19 My fruit is better than fine gold;(u)
what I yield surpasses choice silver.(v)
20 I walk in the way of righteousness,(w)
along the paths of justice,
21 bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me
and making their treasuries full.(x)
22 "The
Lord
brought me forth as the first of his works,[c][d]
before his deeds of old;
23 I was formed long ages ago,
at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
24 When there were no watery depths, I was given birth,
when there were no springs overflowing with water;(y)
25 before the mountains were settled in place,(z)
before the hills, I was given birth,(aa)
26 before he made the world or its fields
or any of the dust of the earth.(ab)
27 I was there when he set the heavens in place,(ac)
when he marked out the horizon(ad) on the face of the deep,
28 when he established the clouds above(ae)
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,(af)
29 when he gave the sea its boundary(ag)
so the waters would not overstep his command,(ah)
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.(ai)
30
Then I was constantly[e] at his side.(aj)
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
31 rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind.(ak)
32 "Now then, my children, listen(al) to me;
blessed are(am) those who keep my ways.(an)
33 Listen to my instruction and be wise;
do not disregard it.
34 Blessed are those who listen(ao) to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
35 For those who find me(ap) find life(aq)
and receive favor from the
Lord
.(ar)
36 But those who fail to find me harm themselves;(as)
all who hate me love death."(at)
Chapter 9
Invitations of Wisdom and Folly
1 Wisdom has built(a) her house;
she has set up[a] its seven pillars.
2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;(b)
she has also set her table.(c)
3 She has sent out her servants, and she calls(d)
from the highest point of the city,(e)
4
"Let all who are simple(f) come to my house!"
To those who have no sense(g) she says,
5
"Come,(h) eat my food
and drink the wine I have mixed.(i)
6 Leave your simple ways and you will live;(j)
walk in the way of insight."(k)
7 Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults;
whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.(l)
8 Do not rebuke mockers(m) or they will hate you;
rebuke the wise and they will love you.(n)
9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still;
teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.(o)
10 The fear of the
Lord
(p) is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One(q) is understanding.(r)
11 For through wisdom[b] your days will be many,
and years will be added to your life.(s)
12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.
13 Folly is an unruly woman;(t)
she is simple and knows nothing.(u)
14 She sits at the door of her house,
on a seat at the highest point of the city,(v)
15 calling out(w) to those who pass by,
who go straight on their way,
16
"Let all who are simple come to my house!"
To those who have no sense(x) she says,
17
"Stolen water is sweet;
food eaten in secret is delicious!(y)"
18 But little do they know that the dead are there,
that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.(z)
Chapter 10
Proverbs of Solomon
1 The proverbs(a) of Solomon:(b)
A wise son brings joy to his father,(c)
but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
2 Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value,(d)
but righteousness delivers from death.(e)
3 The
Lord
does not let the righteous go hungry,(f)
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.(g)
4 Lazy hands make for poverty,(h)
but diligent hands bring wealth.(i)
5 He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.(j)
6 Blessings crown the head of the righteous,
but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.[a](k)
7 The name of the righteous(l) is used in blessings,[b]
but the name of the wicked(m) will rot.(n)
8 The wise in heart accept commands,
but a chattering fool comes to ruin.(o)
9 Whoever walks in integrity(p) walks securely,(q)
but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.(r)
10 Whoever winks maliciously(s) causes grief,
and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,(t)
but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.(u)
12 Hatred stirs up conflict,
but love covers over all wrongs.(v)
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,(w)
but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.(x)
14 The wise store up knowledge,(y)
but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.(z)
15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city,(aa)
but poverty is the ruin of the poor.(ab)
16 The wages of the righteous is life,(ac)
but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.(ad)
17 Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life,(ae)
but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
18 Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips(af)
and spreads slander is a fool.
19 Sin is not ended by multiplying words,
but the prudent hold their tongues.(ag)
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,
but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
21 The lips of the righteous nourish many,
but fools die for lack of sense.(ah)
22 The blessing of the
Lord
(ai) brings wealth,(aj)
without painful toil for it.(ak)
23 A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes,(al)
but a person of understanding delights in wisdom.
24 What the wicked dread(am) will overtake them;(an)
what the righteous desire will be granted.(ao)
25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone,
but the righteous stand firm(ap) forever.(aq)
26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke(ar) to the eyes,
so are sluggards to those who send them.(as)
27 The fear of the
Lord
adds length to life,(at)
but the years of the wicked are cut short.(au)
28 The prospect of the righteous is joy,
but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.(av)
29 The way of the
Lord
is a refuge for the blameless,
but it is the ruin of those who do evil.(aw)
30 The righteous will never be uprooted,
but the wicked will not remain in the land.(ax)
31 From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom,(ay)
but a perverse tongue(az) will be silenced.
32 The lips of the righteous know what finds favor,(ba)
but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.(bb)
Chapter 11
1 The
Lord
detests dishonest scales,(a)
but accurate weights find favor with him.(b)
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace,(c)
but with humility comes wisdom.(d)
3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.(e)
4 Wealth(f) is worthless in the day of wrath,(g)
but righteousness delivers from death.(h)
5 The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight,(i)
but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.(j)
6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.(k)
7 Hopes placed in mortals die with them;(l)
all the promise of[a] their power comes to nothing.(m)
8 The righteous person is rescued from trouble,
and it falls on the wicked instead.(n)
9 With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors,
but through knowledge the righteous escape.(o)
10 When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;(p)
when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.(q)
11 Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,(r)
but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.(s)
