Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse,

After the deportation to Babylon, Jechoniah fathered Salathiel, Salathiel fathered Zerubbabel,1 Chronicles 3:17,19; Ezra 3:2; 5:2; Nehemiah 12:1; Haggai 1:1;">[xr]

Zerubbabel fathered Abiud, Abiud fathered Eliakim, Eliakim fathered Azor,

Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, Achim fathered Eliud,

Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob.

Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, who was the mother of Jesus,of whom Jesus was born">[fn] who is called the Christ.[fn]

So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen[fn] generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon were fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ[fn] were fourteen generations.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ[fn] happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged[fn] to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit.Luke 1:27,35;">[xr]

Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her secretly.Deuteronomy 24:1;">[xr]

After he had thought about it, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.Luke 1:35;">[xr]

She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus,Joshua, meaning The Lord saves.">[fn] because he is the one who will save his people from their sins."Luke 1:31; Acts 4:12; 5:31;">[xr]

Now all this happened to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said,

"See, a virgin will become pregnantIsaiah 7:14;">[xr] and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel,"Isaiah 7:14">[fn] which means, "God with us."

When Joseph got up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary asMary as">[fn] his wife.

He did not have marital relations withdid not know">[fn] her until she had given birth to a son;to her firstborn son">[fn] and he named him Jesus.Exodus 13:2; Luke 2:7,21;">[xr]
