He existed in the beginning with God.Genesis 1:1;">[xr]

Through him all things were made, and apart from him nothing was made that has been made.Psalm 33:6; John 1:10; Ephesians 3:9; Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2; Revelation 4:11;">[xr]

In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity.was the light of people">[fn]John 5:26; 8:12; 9:5; 1 John 5:11;">[xr]

And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.understood it">[fn]John 3:19;">[xr]

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.Malachi 3:1; Matthew 3:1; Luke 3:2; John 3:33;">[xr]

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.Acts 19:4;">[xr]

He was not the light, but he camehe came">[fn] to testify about the light.

ThisHe">[fn] was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world.every person who is coming into the world">[fn]Isaiah 49:6; John 1:4; 1 John 2:8;">[xr]

He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him.John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2; 11:3;">[xr]

He came to his own creation,possessions">[fn] yet his own people did not receive him.Luke 19:14; Acts 3:26; 13:46;">[xr]

However, to all who received him, to those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God's children,Isaiah 56:5; Romans 8:15; Galatians 3:26; 2 Peter 1:4; 1 John 3:1;">[xr]

who were born, not merely in a physical sense,not of bloods">[fn] or from a fleshly impulse, or from man's desire, but of God.John 3:5; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23;">[xr]

The Word became flesh and tabernacledpitched his tent">[fn] among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father's unique Son,Son">[fn] full of grace and truth.Isaiah 40:5; Matthew 1:16,20; 17:2; Luke 1:31,35; 2:7; John 2:11; 11:40; Romans 1:3; Galatians 4:4; Colossians 1:19; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 2:11,14, 16-17; 2 Peter 1:17;">[xr]

John told the truth about him when he cried out, "This is the person about whom I said, 'The one who comes after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.'"Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:7; Luke 3:16; John 1:32; 5:33; 8:58; Colossians 1:17;">[xr]

From his fullness we have all received one gracious gift after another.grace for grace">[fn]John 3:34; Ephesians 1:6-8; Colossians 1:19; 2:9-10;">[xr]

No one has ever seen God. The unique God,Son">[fn] who is close to the Father's side, has revealed him.Exodus 33:20; Deuteronomy 4:12; Matthew 11:27; Luke 10:22; John 3:16,18; 4:14; 6:46; 1 Timothy 1:17; 6:16; John 3:16,18, 1 John 4:9,12, 20;">[xr]

This was John's testimony when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"John 5:33;">[xr]

He spoke openly and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."[fn]Luke 3:15; John 3:28; Acts 13:25;">[xr]

So they asked him, "Well then, are you Elijah?"He said, "I am not.""Are you the Prophet?"He answered, "No."Deuteronomy 18:15,18; Malachi 4:5; Matthew 17:10;">[xr]

Then they said to him, "Who are you? We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"

He replied,Isaiah 40:3; Matthew 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4; John 3:28;">[xr] "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make the way of the Lord straight,'"Isaiah 40:3">[fn] as the prophet Isaiah said.

Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

They asked him, "Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Christ[fn] or Elijah or the Prophet?"

John answered them, "I am baptizing within">[fn] water, but among you stands a man whom you do not know,Malachi 3:1; Matthew 3:11;">[xr]

the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie."John 1:15,30; Acts 19:4;">[xr]

This happened in BethanyBethabara">[fn] on the other side[fn] of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.Judges 7:24; John 10:40;">[xr]

The next day Johnhe">[fn] saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!Exodus 12:3; Isaiah 53:7,11; John 1:36; Acts 8:32; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Galatians 1:4; Hebrews 1:3; 2:17; 9:28; 1 Peter 1:19; 2:24; 3:18; 1 John 2:2; 3:5; 4:10; Revelation 1:5; 5:6;">[xr]

This is the one about whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.'John 1:15,27;">[xr]

I didn't recognize him, but I came baptizing within">[fn] water so that he might be revealed to Israel."Malachi 3:1; Matthew 3:6; Luke 1:17,76-77; 3:3-4;">[xr]

John also testified, "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.Matthew 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 5:32;">[xr]

I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize within">[fn] water told me, 'The person on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the one who baptizes within">[fn] the Holy Spirit.'Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:5; 2:4; 10:44; 19:6;">[xr]

I have seen this and have testified that this is the SonChosen One">[fn] of God."

The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples.

As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"John 1:29;">[xr]

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

But when Jesus turned around and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi," (which is translated "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"

He told them, "Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.the tenth hour">[fn]

Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.him">[fn]Matthew 4:18;">[xr]

AndrewHe">[fn] first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated "Christ").[fn]

He led Simonhim">[fn] to Jesus. Jesus looked at him intently and said, "You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas"Cephas means rock in Aram.">[fn] (which is translated "Peter").Peter means rock in Gk.">[fn]Matthew 16:18;">[xr]

The next day Jesus decided to go away into Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.John 12:21;">[xr]

Philip found Nathaniel and told him, "We have found the man about whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote - Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth."Genesis 3:15; 49:10; Deuteronomy 18:18; Isaiah 4:2; 7:14; 9:6; 53:2; Micah 5:2; Zechariah 6:12; 9:9; Matthew 2:23; Luke 2:4; 24:27; John 21:2;">[xr]

Nathaniel said to him, "Out of Nazareth? What good can that be?" Philip told him, "Come and see!"John 7:41-42,52;">[xr]

Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said about him, "Look, a true Israelite, in whom there is no falsehood!"Psalm 32:2; 73:1; John 8:39; Romans 2:28-29; 9:6;">[xr]

Nathaniel said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

Nathaniel replied to him, "RabbiRabbi is Heb. for Master and/or Teacher">[fn] , you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"Matthew 14:33; 21:5; John 18:37; 19:3;">[xr]

Jesus said to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that."
