1 You therefore, my son, R53F13 be R54 strong in the grace that is in Christ R55 Jesus. 2 The things which R56 you have heard from me in the presence of many R57 witnesses, entrust R58 these to faithful R59 men who will be able R60 to teach others also. 3 Suffer R61 hardship with me, as a good soldier R62 of Christ R63 Jesus. 4 No soldier in active service entangles R64 himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 Also if anyone competes R65 as an athlete, he does F14 not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The R66 hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. 7 Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen R67 from the dead, descendant R68 of David, according R69 to my gospel, 9 for F15 which I suffer R70 hardship even to imprisonment R71 as a criminal; R72 but the R73 word of God is R74 not imprisoned. 10 For this reason I R75 endure all things for the R76 sake of those who are chosen, so R77 that they also may obtain the salvation R78 which is in Christ R79 Jesus and with it eternal R80 glory. 11 It R81 is a trustworthy statement:
For if R82 we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
13 If we are faithless, He R85 remains faithful, for He R86 cannot deny Himself.
An Unashamed Workman
14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge R87them in the presence of God not to wrangle R88 about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present R89 yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the R90 word of truth. 16 But avoid R91 worldly R92and empty chatter, for it F17 will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their talk F18 will spread like gangrene. F19 Among them are Hymenaeus R93 and Philetus, 18men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the R94 resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the R95 faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the firm R96 foundation of God stands, having this seal, R97 "The R98 Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone R99 who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness."
20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some R100 to honor and some to dishonor. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these R101things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared R102 for every good work. 22 Now flee R103 from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, R104 love and peace, with those who call R105 on the Lord from R106 a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, R107 knowing that they produce R108 quarrels. F2024 The R109 Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able R110 to teach, patient when wronged, 25 with R111 gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if R112 perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the R113 knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the R114 snare of the devil, having been held R115 captive by F21 him to do his will.
