Holman Bible DictionarySosthenes
(ssahss' thih neez) 1. The “chief ruler of the synagogue” at Corinth (Acts 18:17 ) who led the charges against Paul before Gallio the “the deputy of Achaia” (Acts 18:12 ). When Gallio dismissed the charges, the crowd beat Sosthenes (Acts 18:17 ). 2. Man Paul mentioned in salutation to the Corinthian church (1 Corinthians 1:1 ) as his “brother.” The Corinthians knew this Sosthenes as a Christian and a helper of Paul. From Theodoret until recently, interpreters have thought that there was only one Sosthenes, that the synagogue ruler became a Christian in the dramatic way of Paul, from persecutor of the church to the faith. Opinion today is sharply divided.
