The yew tree appears to renew itself out of its own decay the decayed wood at the centre of an old yew is gradually formed into rich vegetable mould, and fresh verdure spring: from it. How like is this to our inward corruptions, which have a marvelous, vitality, so that one sin feeds upon the death of another. If we are cured of some one fault, we grow proud of the amendment; or if we perceive ourselves to be in the wrong and strive against the evil, we are too apt to despond and become unbelieving. So pride and unbelief, two master evils, grow out of the decay of other sins.
