Fetter
Holman Bible Dictionary
Translation of several Hebrew and Greek terms referring to something that constrains, especially a shackle for the foot. Fetters were made of wood, bronze (Judges 16:21; 2 Chronicles 33:11 ), or iron (Psalm 149:8 ). Fetters worn on the feet were often joined by a rope or chain to hobble the prisoner (Mark 5:4 ). Fetters were painful to the feet (Psalm 105:18 ). Paul claimed that though he wore fetters, the word of God was not fettered (2 Timothy 2:9 REB, RSV).
