(1) a loose panel or hanging flap in a garment; (2) the skirt of a robe; (3) the front part of the lower trunk and the upper part of the thighs of a seated person. 2 Kings 4:39 uses lap in sense 1. This sense is also common in figurative passages concerning reward and retribution ( Isaiah 65:6-7; Jeremiah 32:18 , NIV, NRSV). Sense 2 is perhaps intended at Nehemiah 5:13 , though sense 1 is possible (so NIV, NRSV). KJV did not use lap in sense 3. Compare Judges 16:19 (NIV); Ruth 4:16 (NAS, NIV); 2 Kings 4:20 (NAS, NIV, RSV). The NIV frequently replaces bosom with lap (for example, Proverbs 6:27; Ecclesiastes 7:9 ).
