Flavio Biondo

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(1388-1463) Catholic archaeologist and historian, born Forli, Italy; died Rome, Italy. He was secretary to Popes Eugenius IV, Nicholas V, Calixtus III, and Pius II. He is considered a founder of the science of archaeology and of Christian and medieval topography, and compiled three encyclopedias which form the basis of all subsequent dictionaries of Roman antiquities.
