Born 1823; died 1900. Noted comparative philologist and Sanskrit scholar, his chief works on each subject being Lectures on the Science of Language, and A History of ancient Sanskrit Literature. His well known collection The Sacred Books of the East made accessible to English readers the important sacred texts of India and other Oriental lands.
