1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: nuntius, messenger)

An official prelate representing the pope at the seat of a foreign government. His duty is to handle the affairs between the Apostolic See and the civilgovernment. In Catholic countries, the nuncio is always the dean of the diplomatic corps.
