Author, born Quebec, Canada, 1786; died there, 1871. Educated at Quebec Seminary, he was early forced to forsake public life, retiring to the country for 30 years of study, producing, at the age of 75, "Les Anciens Canadiens" (The Early Canadians), an historical novel based on fact, illustrating national character and customs, and relating the fall of New France. This and the "Memoires" (1866), anecdotal history, are authentic chronicles of this obscure, but eventful, period.
