Reigned from 384 to November 26, 399. Born in Rome, Italy, c.334;died there on November 26, 399. His letter to Bishop Himerius of Spain, in which he exercised his supreme ecclesiastical authority on fifteen points of Catholic dogma, is the oldest and most completely preserved papal decretal. He condemned the heretics Jovinian and Bonosus, but at the same time he rebuked the over-zealous accusers of the heretic Priscillian. By recognizing Flavian as head of the See of Antioch he healed the Meletian schism. Feast, Roman Calendar, November 26,.
