Huzzab

Holman Bible Dictionary

(huhz' zab) KJV transliteration of Hebrew word whose meaning in the context of Nahum 2:7 is not clear. KJV takes it as a city-state. Other translators take the word as a Hebrew verb meaning “fixed” (NAS) or “decreed” (NRSV, NIV). Others see a feminine noun: “train” of captives (REB), “queen” (TEV), “its mistress” (RSV). The verbal translation is probably correct, pointing to God's established plan announced through the prophet to defeat Assyria and its capital Nineveh. Otherwise, the term is describing Nineveh in figurative language, perhaps referring to deportation of dressed-up idols defeated in war.
