Lantern

Holman Bible Dictionary

Portable container with transparent openings used to display and protect a light. The Greek term used at John 18:3 is of uncertain meaning, though some type of light is clearly intended. In John's ironic scene, the mob comes with “artificial” lights to arrest Jesus, “the light of the world” ( John 8:12; John 9:5; John 11:9; John 12:35-36 ,John 12:35-36,12:40 ).
